It’s unbelievable just how awesome I really am. Stunning, actually.
To back up a little, about three weeks ago while riding home, I took a tumble off my bike, over my handle bars and onto some very hard concrete. Being so super, I picked myself up and continued the rest of the way home.
The next morning I discovered that both thumbs and heels of my hands were swollen and immobile, my right hand had a ugly scab on it as did half my left calf and 90% of my left knee (also immobile). Attempting to do anything was difficult. Have you ever tried to brush your teeth without thumbs? Let me tell you, it IS hard!
I iced my hands and rested up as much as I could possibly stand (before absolutely losing my mind from being inside for two days) and continued on my daily activities and chores. My scabs were ugly (fear not! NO photos!) but healed nicely and over the last three weeks I regained mobility in my left knee and both hands.
Jarred and I had a flight to Yellowknife booked for the end of June and as the most compact and interesting item to bring on a plane is knitting, I brought mine. I figured that I was good to knit as I had taken a three week hiatus from knitting to allow my thumbs to heal.
And knit, I did! Furiously and ferociously! Like an anorexic let loose in a chocolatiers! I was a whirl of alpaca and wool string for two solid days. It was refreshing to knit after such an unplanned absence and exciting to finally get some inches on a long forgotten project.
However, two days later my left thumb was still aching. In fact, it was aching beyond the thumb into the upper palm and down the forearm. So I swiped one of Jarred’s doctor’s appointments and went in for myself. And guess what?
I may have fractured my scaphoid!! The scaphoid is one of eight really crucial bones that moves your wrist and thumb. See? I AM awesome! I went and had some x-rays taken but no word back yet from the doctor.
Until then I am not allowed to knit or do other minute movements with that hand. It’s not too bad as I am right handed and it is my left scaphoid. However, I do eat left-handed, play and deal cards left-handed and…. knit left-handed. Rita and Jarred have taken to ’supervising’ me around my knitting bag and I am being drilled several times daily as to whether or not I snuck away and knit while their backs were turned.
And the sad thing is I can’t even thumb my nose at them for keeping me away from my knitting (I would but it hurts). Poop.
